East Cape Project Reveal

East Cape Project Reveal | Residential Interior Design

Welcome to our #eastcapeproject project reveal. What began as a Conceptual Design initiative for the first floor of a young family’s home, eventually transformed into an extensive Full Service Interior Design project, due to the husband grappling with the unexpected  loss of of his wife and mother of their two young children. For Julie and me, both as mothers and professionals, this project holds a special place in our hearts. We are not only working on more projects with the father and his young children to transform their house into the dream home they envisioned, but we also find immense joy in witnessing their growth and resilience.

Amid the pandemic, we were brought on board, primarily liaising with the wife whom I will call Kat, who was at home with their two young children, aged three and under. This young family was prepared to embark on the first stage of their dream home projects, which encompassed the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. Julie and I were tasked with crafting layouts, conceptualizing designs, and choosing finishes. The plan was for our clients to then take the reins, procure the necessary materials, and oversee the renovation in collaboration with the builder.

Upon our arrival at the house for an in-home consultation, we received a warm welcome from our client Kat and her delightful 3-year-old daughter. We were instantly smitten. The little girl, whom I will refer to as Cece, won us over from the get-go. We were also introduced to the baby, who I’ll affectionately refer to as Bud. Bud was initially unsure of us, observing us timidly from the safety of his father’s arms. During this meeting we had the opportunity to deeply understand the family, learning about their routines, how they utilize their home, and their specific needs. This enabled us to create a vision and concepts for their first large-scale home renvoation.

We're going to create something truly remarkable for this incredibly resilient family

During our design review meetings, we shared conceptual layouts with our clients which range from basic layout to the most impact in both function and price. The kitchen had a wall of windows that the family (and we) loved, so keeping as much natural light was imperative. Knowing the cost of the most desired layout, our clients wanted to digest the options and relook at their budget. Understanding that this was a huge financial undertaking, during a pandemic AND with two babies in the house, we gave them space and waited.

After a weeks of silence, I received a call from our client, the husband, who I’ll refer to as Sam. When Sam informed me of his wife’s passing, I was immediately overcome with emotion. It was hard to believe that he was the one having to share this devastating news, and I struggled to maintain my composure for this man who had just lost his wife and the mother of his two young children. Sam expressed his determination to complete the project for himself and his children. They needed this new space and wanted to continue the journey, but now with our full support. At that moment, I knew that our team, along with the builder we had recommended, were going to create something truly remarkable for this incredibly resilient family.

After reviewing the concepts one more time, we landed on the layout option 2 which maintained the floor to ceiling windows, had the sink in the Island, created a gorgeous yet functional stove feature wall, a fabulous dirty kitchen aka pantry as well as a dry bar in the dining space.  This layout gave our client all the features they had desired plus maintained the full height windows he and his wife so loved.  The builder jumped on board immediately and we hit the ground running.  We tweaked the finishes slightly to align with Sam’s style and vision and created something truly special for this amazing little family.

The outcome exceeded all of our collective dreams. The synergy between the builder’s team and ours was nothing short of phenomenal, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. As a token of our appreciation for our client, we prepared a dinner for him and his children, even enlisting the help of little Dee to concoct a special dessert. We are now embarking on their new patio project and kicking off the makeover of the first-floor furnishings and powder room. We are committed to this family for the long haul and are excited to watch them flourish in their family home.

The kitchen came alive with the sizzle and aroma of a carefully curated dinner menu, each dish prepared with love and a shared sense of accomplishment.

As we reached the end of this remarkable interior design project, it was time to inaugurate the new space with a celebration that reflected its warmth and conviviality. Our team, in collaboration with the delightful Cece, donned their apron’s for the evening.

The kitchen came alive with the sizzle and aroma of a carefully curated dinner menu, each dish prepared with love and a shared sense of accomplishment. From appetizing starters to the main course, every plate was a testament to the camaraderie that had brought us all together in this journey.

But the highlight of the evening was the dessert, an indulgent finale that Cece helped us whip up. The sweet treat not only satisfied our taste buds but also served as a metaphor for the sweet success of our project.

As we all savored the delicious food and basked in the glow of a job well done, it was clear that we had accomplished more than just a physical transformation of space – we had created a place where great moments could be lived and cherished.
